The top emerging tech trends of 2018

2017 was a big year for tech. Twitter finally broke its 140- character limit, Tesla made strides with its electric car and digital assistants like Amazon’s Alexa exploded. It’s safe to say, it was a busy year in tech and 2018 looks no different. Here are the top tech trends for the this year.

Smart Home Devices

When you think of smart home devices, you most likely think of Alexa, Amazon’s intelligent personal assistant. In 2018, we can expect more competition and more products that can connect all smart devices on the current market including Amazon Echo, Google Home and Apple HomeKit.

Smart Cars

While a future of autonomous cars still have a long way to go before they become safe and properly regulated, we are certainly seeing an uptick in carmakers like Ford, Hyundai, BMW and Audi that are showing off improvements in self-driving tech. Some of these news features include smarter parking assistance and less error-prone collision avoidance.

Smart Cities

Imagine a scenario where you enter a crowded parking garage and instead of looking for an empty spot, you know where they all are due to sensors. In 2018, we will see more municipalities that will begin to integrate sensor technology into infrastructure in ways that impact public health and safety. The future of smart cities will allow us to be more efficient with our time and resources.

Wireless Charging

While we live in a (mostly) digital world, our phones still use charging cords—for now, anyway. Wireless charging is on the horizon, with brands like Powercast and Energous unveiling chargers that send power to multiple devices over the air.

Improvements on 5G

While 5G isn’t supposed to roll out until 2020, Verizon and AT&T are making great strides in their progress and will continue to do so in 2018. With 5G, wireless carriers envision an era of incredibly fast speeds that let smartphone users download a movie in less than five seconds and more importantly 5G is expected to greatly reduce latency to let devices communicate with each other with extremely fast response times.
