The most popular programming languages

While there are several programming languages in existence, what are the most popular ones? Below is our list of some of the more popular programming languages for 2017! 

Python

Python is a general purpose programming language that was named after the Monty Python. Python is simple and incredibly readable since closely resembles the English language. It’s a great language for beginners, all the way up to seasoned professionals. 

C++

C++ (pronounced C-plus-plus) is a general purpose object-oriented programming language based on the earlier ‘C’ language. It was first developed in 1973 as a replacement for the original ‘C’ language and C++ is a very popular choice among programmers due to it being a powerful and high performing language. C++ powers all Microsoft’s Windows versions including Windows 10 and Google Chrome. Some of the worlds most sophisticated fighter jets run on programs written in C++.

C#

Developed by Microsoft, “C-sharp” (as it is pronounced) is a variant of the ‘C’ language. Its main use is building Microsoft enterprise software and it runs on the .NET Framework. The C# language is simple, modern, type safe and object oriented.

Ruby on Rails

Like Java or the C language, Ruby is a general purpose programming language, though it is best known for its use in web programming, and Rails serves as a framework for the Ruby Language. Like Python, Ruby is loved by its fans for its highly readable code and the language’s official motto is, “A programmer’s best friend.”

Java

Originally invented in 1991 as a programming language for smart televisions, Java is now used by some 9 million developers and running on 7 billion devices worldwide, making it one of the most popular languages. Java is also popular because it plays a huge part in Android app development and lots of business software.

JavaScript

JavaScript – not to be confused with Java – is another one of the world’s most popular and powerful programming languages. JavaScript makes web pages interactive and can be used to add effects to web pages, display pop-up messages or to create games with basic functionality. JavaScript is also the scripting language of the World Wide Web and is built right into all major web browsers including Internet Explorer, FireFox and Safari.

CSS

Short for “Cascading Style Sheets,” CSS is used to design the format and layout of a website. CSS, while not really a programming language, works with HTML JavaScript to create how websites look. 

PHP

PHP was created in 1994 and a scripting language which can be used to create web pages written in HTML. PHP powers all of the WordPress websites, Facebook, and Yahoo.
